Briya Registration Steps

Learn what to expect as you enroll in Briya classes.

Step 1: Contact Briya

Contact us in one of these ways: 

  • Call 202-232-7777 (between 8:30-5:00, Monday-Friday) 

Tell us which program you are interested in:  

  • English classes for parents 
  • Child Development Associate (CDA) Program, or  
  • Medical Assistant Program 

All students must live in Washington, DC and be available during class time. There are additional qualifications for each separate program.  

Note:
All personal information that you share with Briya in interest forms, on the phone, or during registration appointments is confidential and will be used only for enrollment purposes.  

Briya has an open enrollment lottery every May. See lottery procedures and timeline here.

Step 2: Make Registration Appointment

You can choose the appointment time and location that are best for you out of Briya’s options. 

If you contact Briya by phone, a Briya staff member will set up an appointment with you on that phone call.  

If you contact Briya on Facebook Messenger or using an interest form, we will ask for your name and phone number. Briya staff will call you to make a registration appointment. Be sure to answer the call!  

Step 3: Attend Registration Appointment

For English classes: 

Please expect to spend at least one hour at this appointment.  

During the appointment, a Briya staff member will meet with you one-on-one to: 

  • Fill out and sign registration forms 
  • Learn more details about Briya 
  • Take a quiz to determine what level of English class is best for you  
  • Show proof you live in DC (more details in step 4). 

 

For Child Development Associate Program:  

Appointment #1  

Please expect to spend about two hours at this appointment. 

During the appointment, you will: 

  • Learn more details about Briya 
  • Take a reading only entrance exam. (Click here to view sample entrance exam questions.)

If you pass the exam, you will schedule another appointment. 

Appointment #2 

Please expect to spend about one hour at this appointment. 

If you pass reading exam, you come to another appointment to: 

  • Fill out and sign registration forms 
  • Show proof you live in DC (more details in step 4) 

 

For Medical Assistant Program 

Appointment #1  

Please expect to spend about two hours at this appointment. 

During the appointment, you will: 

  • Learn more details about Briya 
  • Take a reading entrance exam. (Click here to view sample entrance exam questions.)

If you pass the exam, you will schedule another appointment. 

Appointment #2 

Please expect to spend about two hours at this appointment. 

During the appointment, you will: 

  • Take a math entrance exam. (Click here to view sample math entrance exam questions.) 

If you pass the math exam, you will schedule a third appointment. 

Appointment #3 

Please expect to spend about one hour at this appointment. 

During the appointment, you will: 

  • Fill out and sign registration forms 
  • Show proof you live in DC (more details in step 4) 

Step 4: Show documents proving you live in Washington, DC.

To register, all students must bring a photo ID, such as a passport or driver license. This can be from any country or state. 

Because Briya is a public school, all students must also show proof that you live in Washington, DC. This is a requirement of the State Superintendent of Education (OSSE).  

Note: All residents of DC are entitled to public education, regardless of immigration status. Briya does not ask about or record immigration status. 

To prove you live in DC you need to bring acceptable documents:

One of these items: 

  • Letter from the DC Government stating you receive a public benefit, such as TANF, DC Alliance health insurance, or Medicaid (example)
  • Certified copy of Tax form D40 (example)

Or two of these items: 

  • DC vehicle registration (example)
  • One recent gas, electricity, or water bill and one proof of payment (example)
  • Lease and recent receipt for rent payment (example)

All proof of address documents must be current and not expired. All must include your name and DC address.  

If you live in DC but do not have these documents, Briya staff will talk to you about the option of a home visit. 

Some common documents that are NOT ACCEPTABLE as proof of address are a bank statement, internet or cellphone bill, immigration letter, or car insurance. Please do NOT bring these items.  

*Briya must have proof that you live in DC in order for you to be on the waitlist for classes. This is a requirement for all public schools in DC.* 

Step 5: Wait for Briya staff to contact you.
