‘Stand aside for a while and leave room for learning, observe carefully what children do, and then, if you have understood well, perhaps teaching will be different from before.’ L. Malaguzzi This school year, the Early Childhood team embarked on a journey to explore what storytelling with our students and families looks like in our classrooms and how visual documentation enables us to capture children’s stories and share them within the classroom and school community. Why Storytelling? Storytelling is at the heart of what Briya’s infant, toddler, and pre-K classes do every day. This includes empowering students to express their…

And I saw she began to be motivated to read books and…

Staff member Silvia Arias said at the time, “We are in a moment of crisis, and we have to make use of every possible tool to help stop the pandemic. For me, getting…
In fall 2020, Briya student Alma participated in the National Parent Leader Institute, a month-long workshop about community organizing hosted by Innovate Public Schools. The workshop taught Alma to push back and not just accept what she…
Yizel Romero and her daughter, Daniella, attend school together at Briya – Yizel is studying for her Child Development Associate credential and Daniella is in prekindergarten. Briya is DC’s only two-generation school chartered to serve young children and their parents together. Briya’s unique model often means that citywide policies do not take into account the context of families attending the same…

PreK students become tree experts The 20 preK students at our Ontario Road site just finished up 10 weeks of studying trees. To begin, the children observed the parts of trees—roots, trunk, branches, leaves, and fruit—and learned the purpose of each part. They planted seeds and guessed if they would grow better in the sun or out of the sun. This experiment helped them realize that trees start as seeds and need sun and water to grow. The students also learned about the variety of resources trees provide—fruit like apples, oranges, and bananas; wood that can be used for items…

This enables Briya to serve more students, and the small size of the classes—each has ten students and two teachers—allows each child to receive individual attention. Dedicated special education staff help work one-on-one and in small groups in each of the classes to meet individual needs and help with literacy and math. The small…
